The short answer: the evidence-supported cold water immersion protocol for footballers is 11-15°C water for 10-15 minutes, ideally within an hour of the final whistle. That range consistently reduces muscle soreness and markers of muscle damage after matches. Colder is not better. Protocols at 5-10°C for under 10 minutes show weaker results, and cold does not improve next-day sprint performance.


What does the research say about ice baths after football?

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of trained soccer players (Veen et al., Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports) found cold water immersion after matches benefits muscle strength recovery, creatine kinase (CK) levels, and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It found no benefit for sprint performance. In short, cold helps players feel and function better in the 24 to 72 hours post-match, but it is not a performance enhancer.

Worth being honest about: placebo-controlled studies exist in which cold and hot water immersion were no more effective than a placebo for recovery of physical performance in national-level players. The subjective recovery effect is real and repeatable, but the mechanism debate is ongoing. For a practitioner managing a squad through a Saturday to Tuesday to Saturday week, a reliable reduction in soreness is still worth having.


What temperature should the water be?

11-15°C. This is the range where positive effects cluster across studies. Common club protocols sit at 10-12°C for 10 minutes or 15°C for 15 minutes. Below 10°C, tolerance drops, immersion times shorten, and outcomes worsen. You do not need a 3°C plunge, you need consistent 11-15°C exposure your players will actually complete.


How long should players stay in?

10-15 minutes, immersed to at least waist level, and whole-body to the neck where tolerated. Shorter than 10 minutes drops the dose below what the evidence supports. Intermittent protocols, for example 2 sets of 5 minutes with a short break, are an acceptable alternative for players who struggle with continuous immersion.

What is the practical protocol?

  • Fill and chill to 11-15°C. Check with a thermometer, guessing runs warm.
  • Immerse within 60 minutes of the final whistle, after rehydration has started.
  • 10-15 minutes, waist-deep minimum. Keep players talking, it distracts and lets you monitor them.
  • Warm up naturally afterwards. No hot shower for 30 minutes; the rewarming response is part of the mechanism.
  • Log it. Session RPE and next-day soreness scores tell you whether it is earning its place.
