Does colder water give faster recovery?

The practical takeaway: if today was a heavy resistance session aimed at building size, skip the plunge or move it several hours away from the workout. Save cold water for congested fixture periods and high-volume conditioning blocks where fast soreness relief matters more than adaptation.   • Set the water to 11-15C. Confirm it with a thermometer rather than guessing, and top up with ice only if you need to pull it into range.
  • Time it at 10-15 minutes. Use a timer and stop on the buzzer. Past 16 minutes you add cooling risk, not recovery.
  • Immerse the trained muscle. Get in up to the waist or shoulders depending on what you trained, since depth decides how much tissue the cold reaches.
